Spend three Friday evenings exploring the art of making your own matcha bowl. Guided by Laura Viby, the ceramicist behind Viby Ceramics, you’ll follow your bowls through the full process, from soft clay on the wheel to trimming, decorating, and glazing.
Rooted in Japanese tea traditions, the matcha bowl brings form and function into an everyday ritual. It needs room for whisking tea and should feel comfortable in your hands. Together, we’ll explore proportions, surfaces and the small details that give each bowl its own character.
Session 1 · Wheel throwing
We begin at the pottery wheel. Laura will guide you through centering and shaping the clay, focusing on the matcha bowl’s open form, depth and balance. There’s time to practise and explore your own ideas.
Session 2 · Trimming and decorating
Return to the bowls you made in the first session. You’ll learn to trim the base, shape a foot and refine the form before adding decoration and personal details.
Session 3 · Glazing
Your bowls will have been bisque-fired and will be ready to glaze. Laura will introduce you to the glazing process and help you explore colours and finishes for your pieces. After the course, we’ll fire your bowls one final time before they’re ready for collection.
