This class is for those who already feel comfortable at the wheel and would like to dive deeper into the world of Japanese ceramic traditions. Over six weeks, you will explore timeless techniques and aesthetics that have shaped generations of Japanese potters.

You will learn:

  • Spiral wedging and throwing off the hump – two essential Japanese approaches to clay preparation and form.
  • How to work with traditional tools such as the Shippiki and Nameshi leather for trimming and shaping.
  • Classic decorative methods that embrace simplicity, balance, and function.
  • Advanced forms and refining details with an eye for Japanese design principles.
  • Glazing with YONOBI's wide selection of custom glazes.

The class is taught by Japanese ceramicist Daito Takefusa, educated at the Royal Danish Academy and based in Copenhagen. His practice bridges Japanese craft heritage with a contemporary sensibility, focusing on the meeting between material, body, and expression. With Daito as your guide, you will gain not only technical skills but also insight into the philosophy that underpins Japanese pottery.

The course is designed as a calm and steady journey where each week builds upon the previous. The slower pace allows for deeper learning and refinement, giving you time to absorb and practice the techniques.

For experienced students, you must already be comfortable centering clay on the wheel.
