Stentøj

Stentøj er en af de tre typer traditionel keramik.

Stentøj er lavet af en bestemt type ler, der brændes ved høje temperaturer, generelt mellem 2.012 og 2.372 grader Fahrenheit. Det blev først produceret i Kina under Shang-dynastiet (ca. 1.400 f.Kr.).

Stentøj, opkaldt efter dets tætte, stenlignende kvalitet efter brænding, er hårdere og mere holdbart end lertøj. Og i modsætning til lertøj er stentøj vandtæt. Fajance kan overtrækkes med en glasagtig (glaslignende) væske og genbrændes og gøres vandtæt.

Stentøjets kvaliteter gjorde det traditionelt anvendeligt til retter, der blev brugt til mad, til drikkekar og til opbevaring. I dag bruges det ofte til køkkengrej, bagværk og serveringsfade.
